크리스마스에 뭐할 거냐고 누가 물으면 "My plan is to do nothing" 이라고 했는데,
폭우와 Christmas light 속에서
multiverse , 삼위일체 하나님, 그리고 지구 멸망을 경험하면서 보냈다.
아 그리고 달의 발해기지도 띄엄띄엄 구경했구나
Omicron, flight cancellation, 폭설 등의 뉴스가 쏟아지는 가운데 맞이한 약 2025 번째 예수님 생신을 이렇게 보내도 싶나 싶지만,
Henri M Nouwen 등이 쓴 <Compassion> 과 오늘자 encounter with God 를 읽으며 마무리하고 있다.
2021 년 12 월 27 일 지구 Bay Area 의 현실로 돌아가기 위해서 무장 중이라 해야 하나?
기후재난과 질병의 시대인 동시에 주식, 부동산, 비트코인, 재테크와 투자, 각종 대기업들과 억만장자들, 경제지원과 세금의 시대이다.
그런 시대를 살아가면서 그래도 이나마 이렇게 살고있다는 것에 감사하나,
이 시대에 알아야 하고 신경써야 하고 조심해야 하는 것들이 많아서 피로하기도 하고,
어려움을 겪는 이들을 보면 아픔, 무력감과 죄책감을 느낀다.
하나님은 먼 곳에 계신듯 느껴지기도 하고.
그런 가운데 Encounter with God (1) (2) 을 통해서 읽은 이사야 2 장.
약 2700 년 전 이사야가 예언한 last days 속에 살아서 역사하시는 하나님.
하기야 지금과 같은 시대는, 인간의 역사 속 다른 시대에서도 비슷한 양상으로 계속 반복되어왔지.
제국들의 흥망성쇠, 질병과 재난들, 경제적 흥망성쇠, 제왕들과 정복자들과 귀족들, 포드, 록펠러, 카네기 뭐 그런 사람들...
그런 시대 속에서도 하나님께서는 그의 뜻을 펼쳐 오셨을 것이다. 이사야서 2 장의 모습처럼.
답답한 21 세기 현실 속에서, 2700 년 전 이사야가 declare 했던 그 생생함과 절박함을 느낀다.
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob.... Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord" 의 의미를 생각해본다.
2 This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
2 In the last days
the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and all nations will stream to it.
3 Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 He will judge between the nations
and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.
5 Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us walk in the light of the Lord.
ISAIAH 2:6–22
6 You, Lord, have abandoned your people,
the descendants of Jacob.
They are full of superstitions from the East;
they practice divination like the Philistines
and embrace pagan customs.
7 Their land is full of silver and gold;
there is no end to their treasures.
Their land is full of horses;
there is no end to their chariots.
8 Their land is full of idols;
they bow down to the work of their hands,
to what their fingers have made.
9 So people will be brought low
and everyone humbled—
do not forgive them.[a]
10 Go into the rocks, hide in the ground
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty!
11 The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled
and human pride brought low;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
12 The Lord Almighty has a day in store
for all the proud and lofty,
for all that is exalted
(and they will be humbled),
13 for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty,
and all the oaks of Bashan,
14 for all the towering mountains
and all the high hills,
15 for every lofty tower
and every fortified wall,
16 for every trading ship[b]
and every stately vessel.
17 The arrogance of man will be brought low
and human pride humbled;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,
18 and the idols will totally disappear.
19 People will flee to caves in the rocks
and to holes in the ground
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty,
when he rises to shake the earth.
20 In that day people will throw away
to the moles and bats
their idols of silver and idols of gold,
which they made to worship.
21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks
and to the overhanging crags
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty,
when he rises to shake the earth.
22 Stop trusting in mere humans,
who have but a breath in their nostrils.
Why hold them in esteem?
내일 encounter with God 본문인 Genesis 25:1-11, 19-34 을 읽다보니,
에서도 야곱도 한심하기 짝이 없다.
Lentil soup 한그릇에 birthright 을 파는 어리석은 에서나, 그런 에서를 등쳐먹는 얍삽한 야곱이나 참으로 혐오스런 인간들이다.
개인적으로 어린 시절, 동생과 경쟁심같은 거 별로 느끼지 않고 비교적 사이좋게 지내서 그런지 모르겠다.
대학시절에는, 비교적 어린 나이에 미국에 와서 언어 어려움과 지독한 외로움 속에 학창생활을 하며 서로를 응원했었다. 몇 십 년전 조기유학을 오니, 망망대해에 우리만 남겨진 느낌도 들 때가 많아서, 둘이서 경쟁하고 뭐 그럴 여유도 없이 서로 의지하는 수 밖에 없었다.
이제는 나이들어서 '부모'의 나이에서 그 구절을 읽으니, 에서와 야곱이 더더욱 한심하기 그지없다.
내가 그 둘의 부모였다면 둘 다 호되게 혼내서 정신차리게 했을 거 같다. 그런데 그 사이에서 그런 경쟁을 더 부추기는 리브가는 또 뭐람.
사실 그런 부모들이 세상에 꽤 있는듯도 하다. 서로 경쟁심 강한 형제자매들을 비교하고 manipulate 해서 더 경쟁을 붙이거나 이 사람 저 사람 오가며 편애해서 자신들이 원하는 것을 얻어내는 사람들. 이삭과 리브가도 전혀 거룩하지 않고 그저그런 사람이었을뿐이다.
하나님께서 약속의 자손이라고 하는 그들의 행태를 보실 때 얼마나 더 한심하셨을까?
약속의 자손이라고 선택했더니 아브라함의 거짓말부터 시작해, 가족들 등쳐먹는 잔머리와 계락, lentil soup 한그릇에 birthright 을 팔아먹는 어리석음이라니.
그래도 하나님께서는 인내하시고 그들을 연단하셔서 결국 그의 약속을 지켜내신다.
세속적 관점으로 볼 때 좀 특이사항은 야곱이 이삭의 축복을 받았다고는 하지만, 이삭의 재산을 받은 건 전혀 아니고 (아마도 이삭의 재산은 에서가 받았겠지), 하나님의 약속을 받았다는 거다.
그런데 그 하나님의 약속의 결정체는 결국 예수님이신데... 그 예수님을 통해서 야곱의 혈통이건, 이방민족인건간에 구원을 받고 약속의 자손이 될 수 있다는 거다. 아브라함, 야곱 등등과는 피 한 방울 안 섞였을 한국사람들까지도.
하나님의 big picture 란 참 오묘하다.
그래도 예수님을 믿는 이들이라면 야곱과 에서처럼 저렇게 살지 않도록 처절히 struggle 해야겠지.
세상을 살아가다보면 온갖 모습들을 많이 본다. 분노와 짜증이 밀려올 때는, 뚜껑 컨트롤을 위한 기도가 무척 필요하다.
하나님의 big picture 안에서, 신실하신 하나님의 약속을 믿고 의지하며 인내하는 법을 배워야겠다.
또한 영원한 것들을 구하는 지혜와, 남을 이용하려는 이들을 알아보고 멀리하고, 나 또한 그리하지 않을 분별력도 구한다.
