영화 스파이더맨 (Toby Maguire 주연) 에서 Uncle Ben 은 스파이더맨에게 "With great power comes great responsibility" 라고 조언한다. 그 말은 스파이더맨 영화 시리즈 곳곳에서 반복된다. 최근의 톰 홀랜드 스파이더맨 영화에서도 아이언맨이 그 말을 했던 듯 싶다.
그 phrase 는 성경에 나오는 동시에 역사 속 여러 연설 등 속에서 여러번 언급된 거라고.
성경에서는: “To Whom Much is Given, Much Will Be Required” (Luke 12:48).

위 quote 의 영향인지, 달라스 윌라드의 책 <The Divine Conspiracy> 에서 다음 구절을 대하는 순간, 책 읽다 정신이 확들었다. 마침 독서에의 집중이 떨어지고 있던 순간이었다. 헉, 이건 Uncle 달라스가 우리를 향해 하는 조언인가?

그래픽 디자인을 할 수 있으면 멋진 이미지 하나 만들어 Meme 으로 할 수 있을텐데... 아깝군.
Great power 라는 것이 스파이더맨같은 슈퍼파워도 아닐 수 있고, 낮아짐의 섬김&용서와 회개& 애통 같은 종류일 수도 있겠으나, 어떤 상황에서든 chacacter 는 중요한 것이리라. 여기서 character 는 겸손을 뜻하는 듯 하다.
With Great power comes great responsiblity 도, Great power requires great character 모두 다 염두에 둬야 하는 것들이다.
위 문구는 다음 단락에서 나왔다 (p367 - p368)
We would be aware of, roughly, five dimensions of our eternal kind of life in The Kingdom Among Us, and these dimensions more or less arrange themselves in the following progression:
1. Confidence in and reliance upon Jesus as "the Son of Man," ...
2. But this confidence in the person of Jesus naturally leads to a desire to be his apprentice in living in and from the kingdom of God... Our apprenticeship to him means that we live within his word, that is, put his teachings into practice (Johm 8:31). And this progressively integrates our entire existence into the glorious world of eternal living. We bcome "free indeed" (John 8:36)
3. The abundance of life realized through apprenticeship to Jesus, "continuing in his word," naturally leads to obedience...
4. Obedience, with his life of discipline it requires, both leads to and, then issues from the pervasive inner transformation of the heart and soul. The abiding condition of the disciple becomes one of "love, joy, peace, long-suffering [patientce], kindness, goodness, faith to the brim, meakness and self-control" (Gal 5:22; compare 2 Pet. 1:1-11). And the love is genuine to our deepest core.....
5. Finally, there is power to work the works of the kingdom. One of the most shocking statements Jesus ever made, and once again it was in "commencement address," was that "those who rely on me shall do the works I do, and even greater ones (John 14:12). Perhaps, we feel baffled and incompetent before this statement. But let us keep in mind that the world we live in desperately needs such works to be done. They would not be just for show or to impress ourselves or others. But, frankly, even a moderate-size "work" is more than most people's life could sustain. One good public answer to our prayer might be enough to lock some of us into weeks of spritualy superiority. Great power requires great charcter if it is to be a blessing and not a curse, and that character is something we only grow toward. Yet, it is God's intent that in his kingdom we should have as much power as we can bear for good. Indeed, his ultimate objective in the development of human character is to empower us to do what we want. And when are fully developed in the likeness of Jesus, fully have "the mind of Christ," that is what will happen - to his great joy and relief, no doubt.
우리는 Stage 1 이후 Stage 2-5 에서 "intelligently active" 해야 한다고 한다. 어떻게 그러할 수 있나, Dallas Willard 가 제시하는 "curriculum" 은 책에 나와있음.
