좋아하는 성경 본문 중 하나가 히브리서 11-12 장이다. 구약/신약의 하나님의 서사를 잘 요약하고 또 우리의 길을 제시해 줘서 그렇다.
30 년 전 Lordship 의 예수님을 믿은 시기의 QT 본문이 히브리서 본문이었고, 그 당시 교회에서 구약인물들을 훑는 성경공부를 해서일수도 있다. 지난 세월동안 성경 속 믿음의 조상들의 삶을 읽으며, 그들과 함께 예수님을 바라보며 광야를 걷고 경주해 온 느낌이 커서 그렇다.
월터 브르구먼의 책들에 나오듯 세상은 "rat race" 을 뛰고 있다. 생산성, 무한 경쟁, 물질적 풍요 추구, 등등등.
점점 더 그런 경향이 심해지고 있다.
자칫 잘못하면 그 rat race 에 휩쓸린다. 예수님께 시선을 고정시키지 못하고, 물질과 성공에 집중하며, 주위의 이웃들을 바라보며 그들을 경쟁상대로만 여기며 많이 가지고 더 높이 올라가려고 하는 rat race 에 함몰될 수 있다.
히브리서 11-12 장은 따끔하게, 시선을 예수님께 고정시키며 믿음의 경주를 뛰라고 한다.
12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a]
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 “Make level paths for your feet,”[b] so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many
인생은 참 짧다. 많은 이들이 거의 80-90 세 넘게 사는 요즈음이지만 그래도 세월은 참 빠르다.
내가 만약 지금까지 살아온 시간만큼을 더 살면 100 살이 넘을텐데, 그렇게까지 오래까지 살고 싶은 생각도 없고 그렇게 오래 살 가능성도 크지 않다고 본다. 지금까지 살아온 세월보다 덜 살 가능성이 더 큰데, 내 앞에 주어진 시간을 어떻게 살아가야 하는가, 어떤 경주를 뛰어야 하는가? 생각해 본다. 세상의 rat race 가 아닌, 구약/신약의 믿음의 조상들의 계보와 맥을 같이한 믿음의 경주를 뛸 수 있도록 간절히 기도한다. 그 믿음의 길을 볼 수 있는 지혜를 구하며 예수님께 시선을 단단히 고정시킨다.
